Jul 28, 2015 | Legacy Recordings and Columbia Records Celebrate Johnny Mathis's 80th Birthday with Release of Johnny Mathis: The Singles on September 25, 2015

Definitive Four Disc Anthology Brings Together 87 Non-LP and Compilation-Only Tracks including Landmark Hits "It's Not For Me to Say," "Chances Are" and "The Twelfth of Never"

Jul 28, 2015

NEW YORK, July 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, and Columbia Records will celebrate the 80th birthday of legendary crooner Johnny Mathis with the release of Johnny Mathis: The Singles, a definitive four disc anthology, on September 25, 2015. Pre-order available here

Johnny Mathis: The Singles, a definitive four disc anthology to be released on September 25, 2015.

Born September 30, 1935, a then-teenaged Johnny Mathis signed with Columbia Records in 1956, first entering the Pop charts with his inaugural Columbia single, "Wonderful! Wonderful!" the following year.  Peaking at #14, "Wonderful! Wonderful!" laid the foundation, and predicted the future, for one of the most remarkable careers in pop music history, leading to a string of singles successes which includes perennials like "It's Not For Me To Say," "Chances Are," "The Twelfth Of Never" and many others.

Johnny Mathis: The Singles brings together, for the first time in one anthology, every Johnny Mathis recording which was first issued for the singles market, as well as tracks released exclusively on compilations (1958's Johnny's Greatest Hits, considered the first "greatest hits" collection ever created by the music industry, 1959's More Johnny's Greatest Hits and 1981's The First 25 Years--The Silver Anniversary Album).

31 of the 87 tracks on Johnny Mathis: The Singles, are being released on CD for the very first time.  The four-disc anthology compiles, for the very first time, every non-LP single side released for the label between 1956 and 1981.

"When over the course of a career you record as many songs as I have recorded, you tend to forget a few," said Johnny Mathis. "Revisiting this music was a complete surprise. I was thrilled beyond belief that some of the songs that I recorded specifically for single records, some of which had simply disappeared once they had been released, are now going to be heard again. Listening to this collection, not only was I amazed at how great it sounds, but I was being reminded of some songs I had totally forgotten. It is my greatest hope that my fans will share my enthusiasm."

Johnny Mathis is one of the longest-running artists on the Columbia Records label, with 17 million RIAA certified album and singles sales in the US alone.  A sublime vocalist whose approach to pop music transcends passing fads and trends, Johnny Mathis has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories -- from music composed for stage and film to golden era jazz standards, contemporary pop hits, and holiday music both sacred and secular -- assuring his reputation as one of the most enduring traditional pop vocalists in music history.

Perhaps best-known for his landmark singles (three of his recordings--"Chances Are," "It's Not For Me To Say," and "Misty"--have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame) Mathis was one of the very first musical artists to embrace the album concept and record fully-realized thematically and sonically coherent collections of songs.  His 1958 release, Johnny's Greatest Hits inaugurated the ongoing "greatest hits" anthology phenomenon becoming one of the most popular albums of all time after spending an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost ten years) on the BILLBOARD Top Albums Chart; 1959's Heavenly spent 295 consecutive weeks on the same chart.  Johnny Mathis was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2003.

Mathis had 18 Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1963 and 19 Top 40 albums between 1957 and 1978.  He has earned 10 gold, 4 platinum and 2 multi-platinum awards from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)

Mathis was a star student athlete in San Francisco who sang weekends at a local jazz club. Columbia Records' George Avakian was in attendance during one performance, and famously wired back to the label office: "Have found phenomenal 19-year old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts." After his jazzy debut LP was largely ignored upon its release in 1956, Mathis began working closely with Columbia's vice-president and producer Mitch Miller to develop an unbeatable lush pop style, picking romantic ballads that made extensive use of his recognizable, vibrato-heavy croon.

During his time on Columbia, Mathis was essentially recording for two markets: the singles market and the albums market. While he would enjoy success in both realms, it was his non-LP singles that first introduced the world to his distinct gifts: in 1957, his first Columbia single "Wonderful! Wonderful!" peaked at No. 14; follow-up "It's Not For Me To Say" rose to No. 5, and "Chances Are" topped the charts.

Altogether, Mathis logged 18 singles on Billboard's Top 40 between 1957 and 1963 (and has seen 43 of his singles chart on Billboard Hot 100 from 1957 to 1981). After a tenure on his own Global label from 1963 to 1967 (initially distributed by Mercury and chronicled by Legacy in The Complete Global Albums Collection box set), Johnny returned to Columbia, where he records to this day.

Jul 24, 2015 | Tenor Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis Releases Days Of FreeMan, A Tribute To His Hip-Hop Roots -- Album Available Now

"I didn't grow up a hip-hop head, but where I grew up in Buffalo, New York, on Freeman Street, the sound of 1990s hip-hop was ubiquitous," James Brandon Lewis says. "I decided to go back and explore that time through music."

Jul 24, 2015

NEW YORK, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Visionary composer and tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis's bravest, yet most palpable artistic feat, Days Of FreeMan, opens with a poignant and profound introductory monologue from a maternal sage. She says: "The best thing of living is living who you are. You can't be somebody else; you gotta be what God gave you to be and who you are. You look in the mirror and see yourself and say 'I'm James Brandon Lewis."' Next, bass and drums congeal around the sapphire melodic motif of "Brother 1976," recalling one of those jazzy jewel-like hooks from a 1990s Native Tongue hip-hop jam. The effect is like 1990s hip-hop's fascination with jazz being spit back by a prodigious jazz innovator. Welcome to Days Of FreeMan (OKeh) available July 24, 2015.

For his third album, James uses ideas from 1990s hip-hop to masterfully weave together threads of cultural identity, cross-generational identity, and personal reflection.

Days Of FreeMan is imaginatively organized in chapters with classic hip-hop style breaks and interludes functioning as chapter breathers. Like the cross cultural and generational mosaic on Freeman Street proper, the album invites the listener into many dialogues. It is a nod to 1990s hip-hop, and explores rhyme-scapes and the musical conventions of that golden age of hip-hop in a revolutionary way. The album also explores hip-hop as a culture through taking inspiration from the original four pillars of hip-hop: dance, rapping, graffiti, and DJ-ing.

The album also loosely functions as a memoir with an underlay of nostalgia for the carefree boyhood days of fly nicknames, basketball, and those first encounters with the transformative power of music. Adding to the power and emotionality of this thread on growing up, are pontifications on love, identity, and God peppered throughout the album, culled from informal conversations James recorded with his grandmother, Pearl Lewis.

James's immersive creative process to realize his vision for Days Of FreeMan include pouring over hip-hop documentaries for up to eight hours a day, and dissecting albums by KRS-One, Digable Planets, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Medeski, Martin & Wood, along with fearless jazz trumpeter Don Cherry's 1985 album Home Boy and Lauryn Hill's 1998 masterpiece the Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.

How all of this preparation plays out musically is stunning. For years instrumentalists held fast to the lofty notion of "singing through the instrument," but on Days Of FreeMan, James aspires to MC through his tenor. The album's title track perfectly captures the clipped cadence of a master MC with speech-like phrases and a long flowing solo that conjures up a blazing freestyle battle rap session. "Black Ark" traces the legacy of hip-hop from the balmy and pioneering dub explorations of Lee "Scratch" Perry in Jamaica ("Black Ark" is the name of his famed studio) to the burgeoning sounds of hip-hop blaring out in the Bronx.  On "Lament for JLew," in five vigorous minutes James ties together the dual lineages of classical music to hip-hop and classical music to rock using original classical-flavored motifs to illustrate the overlaps.

The second to last track of Days Of FreeMan is the political and timely "Unarmed With A Mic" and is a reminder of hip-hop's power as a form of protest music. On this track, James plays with seething sentimentality. The album concludes with "Epilogue," a reprise of the infectious melody of the opening track "Brother 1976."

On the album, James is accompanied by drummer Rudy Royston. Both took the weighty undertaking of album deeply, researching 1990s hip-hop jams for inspiration and vision. Their attention to the vocabulary of the era James sought to explore, and their panoramic musicality and sympathetic musical skills, match James's artistic ideal to authentically and thoroughly fuse genres and cultures without pandering to trends in jazz-groove records. The record also features a guest spot from the gifted freestyle rapper Supernatural on the track "Days Of FreeMan."

Days of FreeMan is one of James Brandon Lewis's most ambitious works and his most accessible. Reflecting on this intriguing duality he says: "The artist is charged with taking creative risks, but the universe lined up this time and I was able to connect with my audience conversationally."

About James Brandon Lewis
James Brandon Lewis is one of the modern titans of the tenor sax. Hailed by Ebony Magazine as one of "7 Young Players to Watch," James has shared stages with such icons as Benny Golson, Geri Allen, Wallace Roney, Grammy® Award-winning singer Dorinda Clark Cole, and the late "Queen of Gospel Music," Albertina Walker. In bold contrast, James has also worked with such intrepid artists as Weather Report bassist Alphonso Johnson, William Parker, Gerald Cleaver, Charles Gayle, Ed Shuller, Kirk Knuffke, Jason Hwang, Marilyn Crispell, Ken Filiano, Cooper Moore, Darius Jones, Eri Yamamoto, Federico Ughi, Kenny Wessel, Marvin "Bugalu" Smith, and Sabir Mateen. In addition, he has collaborated with the dance company CircuitDebris under the direction of Mersiha Mesihovic. James attended Howard University and holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts.

Currently, James resides in New York City where he actively gigs as a sideman and leads his own ensembles. In NYC, he is a co-founder of "Heroes Are Gang Leaders" with poet Thomas Sayers Ellis—a collective of poets and musicians—and he is a member of the collective "Dark Matter," a conceptual musical collaboration exploring that which is invisible but is detected by it's gravitational effects. Outside NYC, James is an active national and international touring artist. Some career highlights are playing such esteemed festivals as Winter Jazz Festival/OKeh Records showcase with William Parker and Gerald Cleaver; The Eric Dolphy Festival with an ensemble featuring Grachan Moncur III, Richard Davis, Andrew Cyrille, Angelica Sanchez, Ted Daniel, and Alfred Patterson; and Princeton University as part of Fred Ho's "Journey to the West," an interdisciplinary dance and music project.

Simon & Garfunkel - The Complete Columbia Albums Collection on 180gram Audiophile Vinyl and Simon & Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park on CD/DVD for the First Time and 12

Simon & Garfunkel's The Complete Columbia Albums Collection vinyl and The Concert in Central Park CD/DVD are now available for preorder:

Complete Columbia Albums Collection (Vinyl):
Concert in Central Park (CD/DVD):

PBS has announced that it will air "The Concert in Central Park" (a full-length film originally broadcast on HBO in 1982) during its August Pledge Week (please check local listings).

The most comprehensive 12" vinyl Simon & Garfunkel anthology ever assembled, The Complete Columbia Albums Collection includes the duo's five Columbia Records studio masterpieces (first released between 1964 and 1970) as well as Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, their all-time best-selling title. Originally released in June 1972, two years after the duo split up, Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits--a mix of 10 studio tracks (nine of them singles) and four (then) previously unreleased live recordings--sold more than 14 million copies in the US alone.

The new CD/DVD and 12" vinyl release of The Concert in Central Park (recorded in 1981) has been remastered for its CD/DVD and 12" vinyl release. Simon & Garfunkel's historic 1981 reunion concert drew more than half a million fans to New York's Central Park and was originally released as an album for Warner Bros. in February 1982.

Each of the discs housed in the Simon & Garfunkel - Complete Columbia Albums Collection comes in a 12" sleeve replicating the original album artwork. Each of the albums in the boxed collection has been remastered and struck on 180gram audiophile vinyl.

These six Columbia Records albums are the essential recordings which defined Simon & Garfunkel's distinctive harmonic sound and Paul Simon's probing lyrical sensibilities for a succession of generations who've come of age listening to the duo's culturally transformative music.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, each born in 1941, grew up three blocks away from each other in Kew Garden Hills, Queens, New York and met in grade school in 1953 when they were both cast in the same school play. Simon, a guitarist and aspiring songwriter, and Garfunkel, an extraordinary singer with a pure tenor range and uncanny intonation, began performing together as "Tom and Jerry" in the mid-1950s, releasing their first professional recording in 1957.

The duo's original sound, initially influenced by the harmonies of the Everly Brothers and the insistent rockin' rhythms and poetic swing of Chuck Berry, made a quantum leap during the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the early 1960s. Paul Simon's songwriting developed along provocative and topical lines when the pair recorded Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.--their first album as "Simon & Garfunkel" and their first for Columbia Records--in 1964.

Though S&G's debut reached only a small audience when first released, one of its tracks, "The Sound of Silence"--a haunting acoustic recording illuminated by the signature solo and harmony vocal blends S&G invented and perfected--had been overdubbed with electric instruments and released to radio, unbeknownst to either Simon or Garfunkel. The electrified version of "The Sound of Silence" became a massive hit, one of the archetypal anthems of an emerging folk-rock movement. Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. was re-released in January 1966, alongside Simon & Garfunkel's second studio album, Sounds of Silence, which included the electric hit single version of the song.

"The Sound of Silence" launched a long unbroken chain of hits and album successes for Simon & Garfunkel. "I Am a Rock," a song that first appeared on The Paul Simon Songbook, became an enormous smash in its Simon & Garfunkel incarnation.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, S&G's third studio album, was released in October 1966 and generated five singles.

"Mrs. Robinson," another anthemic Paul Simon composition, became the centerpiece for the soundtrack to "The Graduate," the iconic generational film directed by Mike Nichols.

"Mrs. Robinson" was also included on Simon & Garfunkel's fourth studio album, Bookends, which hit #1 in the US and the UK, becoming the pair's first #1 album. Simon and Garfunkel upped the ante once again with Bridge Over Troubled Water, an album that hit #1 all over the world following its release in January 1970. Their fifth, and last full studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Water featured a title track that ranks with the most beautiful songs ever written, made unforgettable through one of the most emotionally uplifting vocal performances ever recorded. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" brought the two partners' gifts to their highest expression. The album has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.

Going out on the high note of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon & Garfunkel broke up their musical partnership to pursue individual musical, artistic and personal directions.

Simon and Garfunkel have reunited periodically for special musical events, notably a free concert in New York's Central Park in 1981, captured in The Concert in Central Park and a select series of "Old Friends" shows in 2004.

When Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunited for a one-off performance on the Great Lawn of New York's Central Park in 1981, the high-profile event drew one of the largest audiences ever assembled for a single concert. The show incorporated breath-taking full-band arrangements of Simon & Garfunkel's best-loved songs into a fan's dream set-list featuring incredible selections from Paul Simon's and Art Garfunkel's solo repertoires.

The 1981 Simon & Garfunkel reunion came into being when New York City officials decided to hold a free public concert to help the nonprofit Central Park Conservancy raise awareness and money for desperately needed renovations to the park, then in a state of serious decline. The right choice to headline the concert would have an enormous impact on the future of the city and the rebirth of Central Park.

Simon & Garfunkel, quintessential New Yorkers, embodied the spirit of the city, the times and generations of music lovers. "Unlike many of the Gotham-bred pop stars of their generation who made it big," wrote Stephen Holden in his review of the concert for Rolling Stone. "[Simon and Garfunkel] stayed around the city, continuing to assimilate its cultural resources, recycle them and give them back."

Simon & Garfunkel took to the Great Lawn on September 19, 1981, with a diverse set that drew upon their classic works as well as selections from Paul and Art's solo catalogs, many performed with dramatic new arrangements augmented with an expanded, 11-man band including notable session players Pete Carr (guitar), Anthony Jackson (bass), Richard Tee (piano), Rob Mounsey (synthesizers) and Steve Gadd (drums). An early rainfall did not deter audiences; an estimated 500,000 people were in attendance, exceeding initial expectations and becoming one of the largest concert audiences of all time.

In 1982, The Concert In Central Park was released as a double album and broadcast on HBO. Fans and critics were unanimous in their praise of the concert, while the duo would be inspired to embark on a world tour in the spring of that year. As the decade continued, donations inspired by the concert helped restore the park to its current state, with concerts still regularly held on the Great Lawn in the spirit of Simon & Garfunkel's magical night more than three decades ago.

Simon & Garfunkel created one of pop music's most distinctive vocal harmony signature sounds and their biggest hits--including "The Sound of Silence" (1964), "I Am a Rock" (1965), "Homeward Bound" (1965), "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" (1966), "A Hazy Shade of Winter" (1966), "Mrs. Robinson" (1968), "Bridge over Troubled Water" (1969), "The Boxer" (1969), and "Cecilia" (1969)--have topped the charts all over the world. Simon & Garfunkel are the recipients of several Grammy Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

Jul 01, 2015 | Sony Classical Releases MAX Original Motion Picture Soundtrack -- Album Available Now

Composed By Trevor Rabin

Jul 1, 2015

NEW YORK, July 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Classical announces release of the soundtrack to Warner Bros. Pictures' and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures' film MAX. With music composed by one of Hollywood's most in-demand film composers, Trevor Rabin, the soundtrack is available now digitally and on CD

MAX, a family action adventure from co-writer/director Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans, Now You See Me), is a coming-of-age story about a young teen from a family dealing with loss, who finds friendship, comfort and adventure with the heroic military dog of his fallen brother, a United States Marine who served his country on the frontlines of the war in Afghanistan.

Composer Trevor Rabin (Armageddon, Deep Blue Sea, The Great Raid, National Treasure and Snakes On A Plane) created an equally adventurous and uplifting soundtrack. By combining suspenseful sequences and heroic highlights with both classical and contemporary tone colors, Rabin managed to arrange a score that is inspiring and entertaining.

Rabin, a South African born guitarist, keyboardist, singer, songwriter, producer and recording engineer, has earned a worldwide reputation for his innovative work as a musician and composer, scoring over three dozen films. He has received numerous awards including eleven BMI Film and TV Awards, a Grammy, a Lifetime Achievement Award (Los Angeles Music Awards), a Career Achievement Award (Temecula International Film Festival), and Gold Medal for Excellence in Film Music Award (Park City Film Festival). His theme music also backs the American baseball and basketball games and his Remember The Titans score reverberates behind the Olympic Games telecasts. Trevor has created music that crosses barriers and genres that have made him one of the premier composers of contemporary music.

About MAX

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes "Max," a family action adventure from writer/director Boaz Yakin ("Remember the Titans," "Fresh").

A precision-trained military dog, Max serves on the frontlines in Afghanistan alongside his handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott.  But when things go terribly wrong on maneuvers, Kyle is mortally wounded and Max, traumatized by the loss of his best friend, is unable to remain in service.

Sent stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle's teenage brother, Justin, so Max is saved when he is adopted by Kyle's family. But Justin has issues of his own, including living up to his father's expectations, and he isn't interested in taking responsibility for his brother's troubled dog.  However, Max may be Justin's only chance to discover what really happened to his brother that day on the front, and with the help of Carmen, a tough-talking young teen who has a way with dogs, Justin begins to appreciate his canine companion.

Justin's growing trust in Max helps the four-legged veteran revert back to his heroic self, and as the pair race to unravel the mystery, they find more excitement—and danger—than they bargained for.  But they each might also find an unlikely new best friend…in each other.

"Max" stars Josh Wiggins ("Hellion") as Justin Wincott, Lauren Graham (TV's "Parenthood") as his mom, Pamela, and Oscar nominee Thomas Haden Church ("Sideways") as his dad, Ray.

Yakin directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Sheldon Lettich ("Rambo III," "Double Impact").  Karen Rosenfelt ("Marley & Me," the "Twilight" series) and Ken Blancato ("The Book Thief") produced the film, with Ben Ormand and Yakin serving as executive producers.

Yakin's behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Stefan Czapsky ("Safe"), production designer Kalina Ivanov ("The Vow," "Little Miss Sunshine"), editor Bill Pankow ("The Untouchables," "Let's Be Cops") and costume designer Ellen Lutter ("Grown Ups," "50 First Dates).  The music is by Trevor Rabin ("Grudge Match," "Remember the Titans").

Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures present, a Sunswept Entertainment production, a Boaz Yakin movie, "Max."  The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company and MGM.  It has been rated PG for action violence, peril, brief language and some thematic elements.

Jun 29, 2015 | Longtime Friends, Cellist Yo-Yo Ma & Pianist Kathryn Stott Collaborate On New Album Songs From The Arc Of Life

Available September 18, 2015 on Sony Classical

Jun 29, 2015

NEW YORK, June 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott create a unique classical music experience with their new Sony Classical recording Songs from the Arc of Life available September 18, 2015. This all-new recording also celebrates thirty years of friendship and collaboration in concerts and recordings for Ma and Stott. The album includes pieces they have frequently performed but never recorded, as well as a handful of discoveries.

"I like to think of Songs from the Arc of Life as an invitation to our audience to remember and imagine what the soundtracks of their lives might be," Yo-Yo Ma says.  "Kathy and I have talked for years about recording an album of music we absolutely love, pieces that express the context of a life, of our lives.  Childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, old age: what do they sound like?"

"I love this title," Stott says, "the 'Arc of Life' – because it is one big arc. Once we arrived at the idea, we began to see a beautiful story, a journey through life's experiences. It has taken us a long time and much discussion, back and forth, to discover what that journey might be, because everyone's journey is slightly different."

Songs from the Arc of Life begins and ends with two, much-beloved settings of the traditional "Ave Maria," opening with the soaring, radiant Bach/Gounod arrangement and closing with Schubert's more serene, contemplative version.

In between is a remarkable spectrum of music that includes such enduring favorites as Brahms' "Lullaby," Dvorak's "Songs My Mother Taught Me," Elgar's "Salut d'amour," Gade's "Jalousie" and Saint-Saens' "The Swan," as well as richly evocative works by Debussy, Delius, Faure, Gershwin, Grieg, Kriesler, Messaien, Schumann, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky. Ma and Stott also include a haunting piece by the contemporary composer Giovanni Sollima, a friend and colleague of both artists.

In addition to beginning his fourth decade of collaboration with Stott, Yo-Yo Ma is celebrating a milestone birthday this year.  "Turning sixty has me wondering what the future might bring, but also reflecting on what has passed," Ma says. "Kathy and I have known one another since we were in our twenties. We have a shared performing history and thousands of conversations and experiences and we're delighted, through Songs from the Arc of Life, to share them with you."

Jun 17, 2015 | Columbia Partners With Wicked Cool Records To Release First New Darlene Love Album In Decades, 'Introducing Darlene Love' Due Out This Fall

New Album Features Songs Written By Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, And Others

Jun 17, 2015

NEW YORK, June 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Guitar great/artist/producer/E Street Band icon Stevie Van Zandt has signed seminal pop legend Darlene Love to his Wicked Cool label, partnering with Columbia Records to release a new album by Love coming this fall, titled Introducing Darlene Love.  Van Zandt arranged and produced the album, enlisting a star-studded cast to contribute songs to Love's return to Marquee-pop music making, including, among others, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt, Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, and legendary songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who for more than five decades have reigned as one of the most influential songwriting duos in history.

The highly anticipated album will be released in early autumn, with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Love imbuing new and classic songs with her signature dynamic vocal delivery that the New York Times has hailed as "a thunderbolt voice embedded in the history of rock n' roll…" and Rolling Stone has called "a rare instrument sturdy enough to vault over Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound.'"

The epic E Street Band guitarist commented on the forthcoming release: "Darlene's legendary status is well deserved but I felt the time was long overdue to show a younger generation WHY she has earned that reputation.  Partnering with Columbia Records is a dream come true because now I know the world will hear her."

Love's five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music, with the Los Angeles native nurturing her talent early as a member of the Blossoms, a local trio who began providing backup vocals at recording sessions for artists such as Sam Cooke and Bobbie Day. The Blossoms also were featured as part of the house band for the popular '60s music show Shindig, backing up many of the performers who appeared on the series. Love would go on to become one of the most sought-after background singers in music history, recording with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, and dozens of other vocal giants throughout her career. Her early work with iconic producer Phil Spector on songs such as the pioneering "He's A Rebel," "He's Sure The Boy I Love," and "Why Do Lover's Break Each Other's Hearts," would garner her legend status. She is featured in the 2013 Academy Award winning documentary '20 Feet From Stardom,' chronicling the behind-the-scenes lives of background singers. The accompanying album won a 2014 Grammy in the Best Music Film category.

The prolific Van Zandt creates a compelling production aesthetic on Introducing Darlene Love, echoing the classic recording style of many early '60s pop standards on the forthcoming Columbia Records/Wicked Cool release, available everywhere this fall.

Singer-songwriter and vocal powerhouse, Emily West releases her debut album All For You , available August 14th (Portrait/Sony Music Masterworks).

Currently headlining a multi-city tour, the America's Got Talent Season 9 finalist brings a series of weekly performances of her one-woman show to New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Chicago through June. West is also the opening act for comedian Jay Leno, and will commence her fall tour in September.

All For You features four original songs including "Bitter," the first single. raves that "'Bitter'…swells and soars thanks to West's impassioned vocals. Heartbreak has never sounded quite this uplifting." The music video for the track premiered on Yahoo Music - check it out here.

West wrote three other tracks on the album with K.S. Rhoads: "Battles" she notes "came from a quote that K.S. read by Ian Maclaren saying 'Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle,' so we wrote a song from three points of view." "Glorianna" is "a song we wrote with high hopes that someone like Andrea Bocelli would sing it. Little did I know that when we were writing it, it'd go on my record! K.S. and I both cried when we were writing it. We couldn't stop. The Angels were among us that day."

On "Fallin'," West and Rhoads deliberately evoked "Billie Holiday and an old-school kind of song that dealt honestly about situations in life." The song takes an unexpected tragic turn at the end, and is one of West's favorite originals.

The album also includes several covers of major hits that fans of AGT will remember from her season on the show.

West sang the 1959 pop hit "Sea of Love" at her first AGT audition. "I was cat sitting in New York, trying to figure out what songs to sing—and terrified," she recalls, adding, "I tried to cut it like Patsy Cline might have, and make it my own and from a woman's perspective."

David Guetta and Usher's "Without You" comes from West's generation of music, though she gave it more of a gospel interpretation: "It's definitely a pop song, but when I focused on the lyrics, it became more like a worship song, expressing the need for a higher power—and I sing it like that instead of a relationship song."

For her second AGT audition, West performed Roy Orbison's 1989 hit "You Got It." Here she broke down" the lyrics by turning it into "a girl's song—haunting like the Righteous Brothers, and '50s-sounding."

Cyndi Lauper's classic "True Colors" carries great personal meaning for West in that she grew up listening to her. "She's my hero, and I try to teach all the little girls I know about her as an empowering woman and inspirational songwriter."

Rounding out the album are two songs that West performed so memorably on AGT: "Nights in White Satin," which is special because "it's my parents' love song" and "Chandelier," a track she was initially unsure whether she could perform credibly, but ultimately made it her own.

The Waterloo, Iowa native, moved to Nashville at the age of 18, where she honed her songwriting and performance skills in the local clubs. Soon after arriving, West landed a publishing and record label deal and released three country singles. She was also nominated with duet partner Keith Urban for the Academy of Country Music Awards in the category of "Vocal Event of the Year" for their song "Blue Sky."

Driven by her love and fear of New York City, West got on a plane, got lost on the subway, and found herself auditioning for AGT.  This gave her the opportunity to demonstrate her vulnerability and versatility to a wide audience.

All for You culminates a dizzying climb from West's relatively humble origins as a country recording artist to national recognition after being championed by AGT judge Howard Stern and coming in second in the finals.

Since AGT, West signed to Portrait Records, and in December she shared the stage with her hero Cyndi Lauper at Lauper's annual Home For The Holidays benefit concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York. She also co-hosted the red carpet at the first American Country Countdown Awards in Nashville and has performed the National Anthem at numerous sporting events for the NHL, MLB, NBA, WNBA and the Kentucky Derby.

West also released a video collaboration with Postmodern Jukebox, a Roy Orbison-esque version of Kanye West and Paul McCartney's "Only One."

Feb 11, 2015 | Bob Dylan's Shadows In The Night Album Becomes Worldwide Hit

Feb 11, 2015

NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bob Dylan's new album, Shadows In The Night, has debuted in the Top Ten in 13 countries spanning the globe, including #1 chart entries in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ireland, #2 in the Netherlands and Switzerland, #3 in Austria, Japan and Spain, #6 in Germany and Belgium, #8 in Finland and #10 in Canada.  The album has also debuted at #7 in the United States, making it the artist's 17th studio album to debut in the Top 10 in this country.

Bob Dylan's Shadows In The Night Album Becomes Worldwide Hit

Showcasing the artist's singular interpretive artistry on ten classic American songs, Shadows In The Night is the 36th studio album from Dylan and the first since the release of his worldwide hit Tempest in 2012.  Produced by Jack Frost, Dylan's unique approach to recording the songs included refining complicated arrangements for 30-piece orchestras down to those uniquely tailored for his five-piece band.

The high worldwide chart entries of Shadows In The Night comes on the heels of Dylan's honor as Musicares Person Of The Year at a sold-out ceremony in Los Angeles on February 6.  The event raised more than $7 million for Musicares, the most in the 25-year history of the event.  Following performances of Bob Dylan songs by a who's who of contemporary musicians – including Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Norah Jones, Jack White, Willie Nelson, Beck, Bonnie Raitt and many others – Dylan held the audience rapt with a wide-ranging, nearly 40-minute speech that has now been excerpted in countless media outlets around the world.  The complete transcript of Dylan's speech, taken directly from the artist's handwritten notes, has been reproduced in its entirety in the New York Times and can be found here:

Critical response to Shadows In The Night has been rapturous, with rave reviews coming in from around the globe:

  • David Fricke wrote in Rolling Stone, "The great shock here is Dylan's singing. Dylan's focus and his diction evoke his late-Sixties poise and clarity with an eccentric rhythmic patience in the way he holds words and notes across the faint suggestions of tempo. It is not crooning. It is suspense."
  • The Los Angeles Times's Randall Roberts summed up his thoughts in his review, writing, "Ten songs, 34 minutes, a soaring lifetime's worth of emotion conveyed with the fearlessness of a cliff diver spinning flips and risking belly flops in the open air — that's Dylan and his band on the graceful, often breathtaking Shadows.…Profound, thematically devastating and so well curated as to feel essential."
  • USA Today's Elysa Gardner opined, "To have a songwriter of Dylan's stature champion interpretive singing is cause for celebration. The genuine care and knowing he brings to a different American pop tradition, to the music and lyrics – it's something wonderful."
  • In his 5-star review of the album, The Guardian's Alex Petridis wrote, "It may be the most straightforwardly enjoyable album Dylan's made since Time Out of Mind. He's an unlikely candidate to join the serried ranks of rock stars tackling standards: appropriately enough, given that Frank Sinatra sang all these songs before him, he does it his way, and to dazzling effect."
  • In another 5-star review, Mojo's Michael Simmons wrote, "While countless other contemporaries have recorded Great American Songbook collections, Shadows In The Night -- Dylan's flat-out brilliant contribution to the concept – is not, by any definition, a recreation of the past. His singing on Shadows is his best vocalizing in years – in-studio or out. He glides with the melodies and relaxes into them, enjoying the ride that these gems provide….Much will be made of the autumnal theme: from the age of the material to songs that address mortality. But this extraordinary record is more refreshing burst than last gasp and its timelessness speaks more to life than death."

Concurrent with the release of Shadows In The Night is a 9,000-word interview with Dylan in AARP The Magazine.  Conducted by the publication's Editor-In Chief Robert Love, the interview is one of the most extensive of Dylan's career and covers a broad array of topics, including Frank Sinatra's enduring influence, Irving Berlin, recording of the new album, whether young people find songs from the '40s and '50s to be 'corny,' corporate influence in the U.S., his period of self-seclusion in the mid-1960s and growing up without television, to name only several.  The interview can be found in its entirety on AARP's website (

Bob Dylan's five previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.

Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies.  Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while the artist's globe-spanning concert tours of the past few years have heavily emphasized that album's singular repertoire.

These five releases fell within a 15-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.

In recent years, Bob Dylan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the Officier de la Legion d'honneur in 2013, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000, Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Princeton University, as well as numerous other honors.

Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

"Shadows In The Night is quite gorgeous, the sound of an old man picking over memories, lost loves, regrets, triumphs and fading hopes amid an ambient tumble of haunting electric instrumentation. It is spooky, bittersweet, mesmerisingly moving and showcases the best singing from Dylan in 25 years….[An] extraordinary record. The Telegraph Neil McCormick

"The sound of Shadows In The Night is clear as water.  Not only can you hear every word, every note, that Dylan sings, but you can hear him draw breath before beginning to sing, and sighing out the end of a line.  The instrumentals – even the infrequent horns, and soft, subtle drums – don't ever drown him out.  You're as close as the microphone, making this record feel as intensely personal as, perhaps, it is to its maker.  Dylan sings these songs intimately, sometimes conversationally, with emotion and humor….Shadows In The Night is an early valentine to us all.  It's music to dance to in someone's arms, slowly, with half-forgotten steps in the formal patterns of long ago.  It's a record to remember to, to dream to, and -- most of all -- to feel to." No Depression Anne Margaret Daniel

"A tour-de-force of restrained genius….This is indisputably the singer's most memorable vocal performance in years: irreducibly "Dylan", yet freighted with an unexpected beauty that powerfully reinforces these tales of love, loss and sorrow - and refracted through some of the most tantalising melodies ever committed to manuscript." UK Bill Prince

"[A] stunning new album….Dylan turns the tired standards into introspective, wise musical poems, just as Sinatra did."Boston HeraldJed Gottlieb

"A gem…., once you get past the initial shock of hearing Dylan crooning classics, the biggest surprise is how successfully he pulls it off. How deftly he avoids what could easily have been a ridiculous train wreck. And how he manages to pay respect to timeless songs and an immortal artist — while still doing things his way." Toronto SunDarryl Sterdan

"The performances are almost painfully heartfelt and direct…. Dylan exposes a raw emotional vulnerability that jumps out at the listener…. The music is actually enhanced by Dylan's willingness to move outside his comfort zone. Isn't that what we want from our boldest creative spirits?" Daily BeastTed Gioia

Dec 08, 2014 | The Last Internationale Guitarist Edgey Pires To Be Honored At 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS

Dec 8, 2014

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of his artistic contributions and political activism, Guitarist Edgey Pires of The Last Internationale will be honored at the 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS. The artist receives this esteemed honor amongst a total of 20 Portuguese and Brazilian actors, cultural influencers, journalists, and other trailblazers. The gala ceremony takes place at the United Nations head office in New York City on December 10, 2014.

Edgey graduated from college with a degree in Political Science and went on to write two books, Fighting for Freedom: Because A Better World is Possible (Planting Seeds Press) and Negative Dialectics: How to Accurately Interpret the World (unpublished). This marks a significant milestone for both Edgey and the critically acclaimed New York band.

"The UN is where Che Guevara delivered an incendiary speech against US imperialism. It is where Hugo Chaves, decades later, gave a similar speech in which he condemned 'the devil', George W. Bush, who had spoken from the same podium the day before. It is where KRS ONE went to get Hip Hop officially recognized as an international culture. It is where the Security Council vote on which poor, innocent people in remote parts of the world will get bombs dropped on their heads. It is outside of this building that I have held many banners and shouted for human rights and seen many of my fellow Comrades get tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beat and dragged off by police," said Edgey. "So when I found out that I was being given the Luso-Brazilian Award at the UN for my artistic achievements and social activism, I was as much shocked as I was honored to be included on the right side of this contentious history. Since the event falls on Human Rights Day, I will also be standing outside (once again) demanding that we get some human rights right here at home. I urge everyone from around the world to head out into the streets and fight for a different world."

During the evening, the PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS bestows a statue and a diploma upon all honorees. The event aims to bolster and encourage Portuguese and Brazilian communities in the U.S. through recognizing the culture's luminaries and their respective contributions.

This news concludes a monumental year for The Last Internationale. They recently unveiled their star-studded music video for "A Wanted Man" and performed a powerful "Call For Action" show regarding Prop 47 in South Los Angeles. They are now gearing up to launch a campaign around the rising Student Debt Crisis. The band is passionate about this issue and is planning a more formal announcement early next year.

The Last Internationale first emerged in 2013 with their independent EP, New York, 'I Do Mind Dying. Legendary Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello made an introduction between Delila Paz and Edgy Pires and his longtime bandmate Brad Wilk. The drummer ended up joining the group, and they unleashed We Will Reign this past summer. They've performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and recently supported Robert Plant on tour.
