Podcast Examines Criminal Trial of Holmes, Disgraced Founder of Blood-Testing Technology Firm Theranos
Weekly Bonus Content “Bad Blood: This Week in Court” Available to Subscribers on Apple Podcasts Starting Monday 9/6
New York, NY – August 26, 2021 – “Bad Blood: The Final Chapter,” the new podcast from Three Uncanny Four Productions, in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, examining the criminal trial of entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, premieres today. Hosted by John Carreyrou, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist who first exposed Holmes in 2015 and best-selling author (“Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup”), the new podcast will explore the rise and fall of Holmes and analyze larger questions about Silicon Valley’s business culture that the Theranos scandal raised. The first two episodes are available now.
“Bad Blood: The Final Chapter” kicks off ahead of Holmes’ criminal trial, which begins August 31 in California. As Theranos’ leading expert, Carreyrou will give listeners a front row seat at the trial as it unfolds and provide insight into Holmes’ breathtaking story, her criminal defense, and the prosecution’s case. “Bad Blood: The Final Chapter” begins with an in-depth look at three of the trial’s biggest plot twists: Holmes’s pregnancy, her unusual and risky defense strategy; and the destruction of Theranos’s laboratory database.
“I’ve closely covered the Theranos saga for the past seven years dating back to when Elizabeth Holmes was hailed as the next Steve Jobs,” said host John Carreyrou. “Now with this podcast, I’m thrilled to put the entire story into context as Holmes finally faces justice for the fraud she allegedly perpetrated.”
Episode 1: The Sympathy Play
Elizabeth Holmes’s best chance of getting off is to win the jury’s sympathy. This episode explores the two ways she can do that. One is as a new mother who will have just given birth to a newborn. The other is by shifting as much of the blame as possible for what happened at Theranos to her ex-boyfriend, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, the blood-testing company’s former president and chief operating officer.
Episode 2: Ebola
Public health emergencies and the panic they stoke are breeding grounds for fraud. The COVID-19 pandemic made that glaringly obvious. And it led a lot of people to wonder: if Theranos was still around, would it have tried to capitalize on the global health crisis that’s claimed the lives of millions? Based on Holmes’ conduct during the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic, the answer is likely yes.
Future episodes will focus on Balwani and Holmes’ relationship, Silicon Valley’s fake-it-til-you-make-it culture, never-before-heard conversations between Holmes’ and a New Yorker writer, the effect of Theranos’ testing inaccuracies on patients, and an analysis of the final verdict.
The series is produced by Lena Richards, Rahima Nasa and Jennifer Sigl at Three Uncanny Four. Emily Saul provides reporting.
Listeners can follow the show on Apple Podcasts and all other major podcast platforms. Subscribers to “Bad Blood: The Final Chapter” on Apple Podcasts can tune in for weekly bonus episodes “Bad Blood: This Week In Court” starting 9/6. Each Monday, Carreyrou and other members of the Bad Blood reporting team will break down the events of the trial, providing listeners with expert analysis they won’t be able to find anywhere else.
