New York, NY – May 1, 2024 – Sony Music and Magnificent Noise, today announced the season premiere of The Conspiracy Tapes, a new season of Cover Up that explores the mysterious story behind the man who helped ignite the modern-day conspiracy theory and set the stage for decades-long culture wars that continue today. The first episode is available today, and subscribers to The Binge can listen to all episodes now.
Hosted by filmmaker and documentarian Paul Murphy, Cover Up: The Conspiracy Tapes unpacks and unravels the story of John Todd, who went from church to church in the 1970’s warning Christians to fear a vast conspiracy involving witches led by a sinister organization known as the Illuminati. His fiery speeches were recorded, and tapes were passed around.
Through tape recordings, various interviews and first-hand encounters with those who followed John Todd, The Conspiracy Tapes, reveals how Todd’s teachings would eventually lead to the conception of modern conspiracies like Q Anon and Pizzagate. The Conspiracy Tapes tells the shocking story of a man who was running from his own dark secrets while spewing misinformation and fantasy to his many followers.
“John Todd was not an ordinary con man who tricked people into following him and his beliefs,” said Paul Murphy. ”Throughout this season, we peel back the curtain to provide an unprecedented look into one of the most influential ideologues that you’ve probably never heard of and one whose theories have truly changed our world forever, for the worst.”
